Seriousness
German: Ernst
Common meaning:
Importance, gravity, thoughtfulness; the opposite of play or lightness
Clear meaning:
The densifying of meaning by the self—not depth, but the gripping of form to avoid uncertainty.
Seriousness may seem strong,
but structurally it is contraction—
the attempt to control life through weight.
It arises where the self believes
that meaning must be proven
by heaviness.
But depth needs no seriousness.
It emerges where nothing needs defense.
Seriousness is not authenticity—
it is the tension
that appears when freedom is not allowed.
